Vocalist, composer and performer of the mbira, a traditional instrument of the Shona ethnic group of Zimbabwe. He was born 1944 and died 25 November 1999. Dumi — Dr. Abraham Dumisani Maraire — was the principal importer of Shona musical culture into the United States in the 1970’s and 80’s. Until his death, he continued to spread his culture throughout the world from his home base at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare, where he headed the Dept. of African Languages and Literature.

Husband of Mai Chi Maraire and father of Chiwoniso Maraire and Tendai Maraire.
