Swedish classical composer and educator, born 30 October 1942, Motala, Sweden, died 10 June 2019.

He studied composition at Stockholm Academy of Music, as it was then called, for Ingvar Lidholm and for important guest teachers such as György Ligeti and Per Nørgård. Sandström was himself a professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm 1985-1995 and Indiana University in Bloomington in the USA 1999-2008. He also taught composition at Ingesund Academy of Music 1993-1997.

In 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctorate at Karlstad University, of which Ingesund is now a part. Sven-David Sandström received an honorary doctorate from Linköping University in 1998.

He taught composition at the Royal College of Music, Stockholm.
