"Chilly Uptown" began as a duo of two rappers, Chilly (from Chicago) and Uptown (from New Jersey) who both served in the military together. When Chilly finished his service, Uptown stayed in but he said Chilly should use the full "Chilly Uptown" name as a solo artist. Chilly became a Seattle hip hop pioneer under the name "Chilly Uptown." His first album, I Got Rules, was released in 1988 on cassette and LP on Ever Rap Records in Seattle.
