The Rundfunkorchester des Südwestfunks was founded on 9th of May 1951 (at first named "Großes Unterhaltungsorchester des Südwestfunks"), when the Funkorchester Kaiserslautern was merged with the Unterhaltungsorchester Koblenz. The orchestra was located in Kaiserslautern, principal conductor from the start was Emmerich Smola. When the Südwestfunk (SWF) changed into the Südwestrundfunk (SWR) in 1998, also the orchestra was renamed to SWR-Rundfunk-Orchester Kaiserslautern.Principal conductors:
• Emmerich Smola (1951 to 1987)
• Klaus Arp (1987 to 1995)
• Peter Falk (1995 to 2001)
