Francis Ford Coppola (born April 7, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan, USA) is a five-time Academy Award winning American film director, producer, and screenwriter.
Grandchild of Italian immigrants (Agostino Coppola and Maria Zaza), originally from Bernalda, (in the province of Matera).
He is most renowned for directing the highly regarded Godfather trilogy and the Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now.

Son of Carmine Coppola and father of Roman Coppola and Sofia Coppola.
