The Südfunk-Chor Stuttgart was founded in 1946 as a radio choir for Radio Stuttgart, later Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR), and existed under that name from 1959 until 1998. It was called Chor Des Süddeutschen Rundfunks from 1949 until 1959, since 1998 it's official name is SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart.
It is one of the five choirs affiliated with the German radio and television organisation ARD (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten der Bundesrepublik Deutschland).
