He is the foremost innovator of the viola da gamba, a versatile bowed, fretted instrument with ancient roots in Moorish Spain and Renaissance and Baroque Europe. As much a jazz or rock improvisor as an interpreter of ancient music, Trimble sails the viola da gamba out of its accepted role in historical performance and into a much deserved role as a world instrument.
