4 Steps Of Jive

Members: Frank Ransom

African American vocal group, active in the 1930s and 1940s.

Originally founded as a quintet in Indianapolis in 1935 ("Five Steps Of Jive"), the group went through some personnel and a slight name change ("4 Steps In Jive", 1938) until they again became the "4 Steps Of Jive" when founding members Bennie Calloway and Leroy Duckett moved to Chicago around 1941. There they were joined by Frank Ransom and, in late 1942, the drummer and guitarist Eddie Johnson.

In the summer of 1947, the group, accompanied by Minnie Whitlock on the piano, recorded their only record for the CHORD (3) label. The two titles, "Brown Gal" and "Oshkosh-Bob-A-Losh," were released in early 1948.
