Al Jolson who performed most often in blackface, was born in Srednick, Russia on May 26, 1886. Brought to the United States when he was seven years old, Jolson was reared in Washington, D.C. and made his first stage appearance there. In 1909 he joined Lew Dockstader's minstrel troupe.
