From the back cover:My dear friends,
I hope you will find pleasure in the songs and 'andylogues' in this album, I know that we had great fun recording it for you... Variety being the spice of life, we had some saucy moments in the wide range of this selection, from the rollicking "Playin' Country Music" to the haunting "Amazing Grace" – a song that means so much to so many people all over the world; I have sung it in a mining camp in Labrador – in a sophisticated nightclub in Auckland; and in many and varied venues in between.
"The Rumour" and "Ra Wee Cock Sparra" are included very much 'by public request', and I must say I was thrilled at the reception the latter got when I performed it on the B.B.C. T.V. Hogmanay Show. "Ah – happy memories, happy happy memories" as my dear old friend John Grieve would doubtless say!
But the future is what counts, and it is grand to see such a great re-awakening of interest in the 'Music of Scotland'.
There are many people who have had a hand in this resurgence of interest, and in the van of these I must place the National Association of Accordion and Fiddle Clubs, which happily goes from strength to strength, local commercial radio and all its stations – "Moray Firth", "North Sound", "Radio Tay", "West Sound" and radios "Forth" and "Clyde", for these have given air-time to the music in its own land; and finally the owners of this recording label – "LISMOR" – taking a punt on so many and varied aspects of the sounds of Scotland, from pop to pibroch!
Finally I should like to dedicate this album to the memory of Iain McFadyen who tragically died in April of this year.
As a B.B.C. Producer, and latterly as Head of Light Entertainment, B.B.C. Scotland, Iain was responsible over the years for many programmes that represented his own deep love and caring for our music and entertainment. His was the idea, away back in 1957 to produce a television show that would be a show-case for the dance music, for the songs, traditional and contemporary, for the humour, in verse and prose, of his native land. This "The White Heather Club" came into being and the rest is history.
Apart from his talents as a Producer, Iain had a fine talent for writing music and his name, often in his nom-de-plume of Neil Grant, appears below the title of many songs.
Of the 12 songs in this album, Iain wrote the music for four, to the words of yours truly – "Come In! Come In!", "The Lads of Bonnie Scotland", "Lassie Come and Dance With Me" and "The Girl From Glasgow Town". But Iain's contribution to the healthy state of music and culture cannot be measured solely in terms of song title, he is sorely missed and is a great loss, both professionally and personally.
Here then is a collection of some of my most requested songs; some I have been singing for 20 years, others were only recently added to my repertoire.
May I wish all of you all you wish yourselves! Take care and happy listening!
Yours, as ay!
ANDY STEWART
