Album Info

Release Date: 2019

Label: Opus Series

A record of flutist Ania Karpowicz, pianist Marek Bracha and string quintet Hashtag Strings with Warsaw music by Mieczysław Weinberg.
The album WarszeMuzik is an echo of the festival, which since 2017 has been bringing back to concert life Weinberg's excellent chamber music, placing it in the broad context of the achievements of composers with Jewish roots. The experience of emigration in the turmoil of twentieth-century totalitarianism, complicated identity and recurring inspirations from Ashkenazi music are elements common to the work of many composers, but in Weinberg they create a characteristic, fascinating complexity.
Recordings of youthful Warsaw Mazurkas from 1933, Aria written in 1942 in Tashkent on the news of the liquidation of the Warsaw ghetto, as well as the Flute Concert containing a feisty, urban waltz from the pre-war "Kercelak", are accompanied by field recordings from tenement houses, the last remnants of Jewish Warsaw.
