The First Symphony was conducted by Sir Henry Wood as part of a special BBC broadcast on South Africa's Union Day celebrations in 1943. The Second Symphony (Sinfonia Ricercata) was commissioned for the 1952 van Riebeeck Festival. "Primavera" was commissioned for the Union Festival in Bloemfontein in 1960.
