Balys Dvarionas is one of the leading musicians of 20th century Lithuania. He was an outstanding pianist, conductor and teacher whose musical compositions are acclaimed as masterpiece of Lithuanian Romantic music.
B.Dvarionas was born in 1904, in Latvia. In 1924, after graduating from the Leipzig Conservatoire where he studied piano, he embarked on his teaching career in Kaunas and Vilnius and was professor of the Lithuanian Conservatoire (the present Music Academy) till his death in 1972. B.Dvarionas made his debut as conductor before world war two. In 1940 he organized the symphony orchestra of the city of Vilnius; for a number of years he held a post of the senior conductor of the symphony orchestra of the Lithuanian Philharmonic. B.Dvarionas performed extensively as a pianist and was a prominent representative of Lithuanian piano school.
The musical legacy of B.Dvarionas comprises all genres from opera to symphony to songs, but it's most valuable part is his piano music which constitutes the basis of the pedagogic repertoire of Lithuanian pianists and is frequently performed by contemporary musicians.
This tape present the major piano works by B.Dvarionas recorded at different times by Aldona Dvarionaite, the accomplished interpreter of her father's music.
