Album Info

Release Date: 1974-12

Label: World Record Club

"A Fiona Bentley Production"

The titles have the customary "The Tale of..." on the labels, but not the sleeve. This version has same catalog number on labels & sleeve

Australian WRC pressing, sourced from original stampers and featuring unique sleeve art. Compilation of previously released 7-inch discs. The Jill Parsons signature on the cover illustration had been brushed out of the early 1960s EPs, but is present here. The address indicates 1974 at the earliest, and licensing text, with "exclusively" is the format used before 1975. The label says "stereo", but there is no stereo rosette on the back of the sleeve, and the original EPs were mono. Listening confirms that it is in mono,

At least three versions exist - one with the number 02147 on both sleeve and labels, and one with 02925 on both sleeve and labels. It was reissued in December 1981 as L-02925, so that will be the later number (earlier programmes tended to omit the catalogue numbers altogether, e.g. the Christmas 1977 & 1980 Words & Music magazines, where it was also advertised). It is likely that it was first issued for Christmas 1974, as the new numbering was being introduced, but before it had been finalised - the "L" prefix only occurred on three releases, and the point of the new numbering was for all releases to have a unique number - R-02146-7-8 belong to other releases, whereas R-02923-4-5 do not overlap with anything. The initial 0 precludes it belonging to the old numbering system. The tall and very narrow header font on the label also points to the end of 1974. Also issued on cassette.
