CMAT, the self-styled global pop star who lives at home with her grandparents in Dublin, has just released her third single, the evocative, self-eviscerating 'I Wanna Be A Cowboy, Baby!'. A melancholic and moving slice of light-touch Americana-goes-pop, it's the perfect showcase for CMAT's razor-sharp lyrics and memorable melodies.
CMAT (the moniker of Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson) on 'I Wanna Be A Cowboy, Baby!': "It's mainly about urban isolation - about having all the freedom and resources to do whatever you want but still choosing to do nothing out of deeply-embedded social anxiety and detachment from your own emotions. Sometimes you just turn around and ask yourself, "Why is my life crap? I don't do anything, why not?". I never really have an answer to that, but I wish it was different. I want to be a cowboy instead."
Upon its release Dork Mag said CMAT "rides in to save the day" with the song while The Line Of Best Fit purred over a "bittersweet, country-tinged lament". Clash also premiered the video, directed by Sarah Corcroan from Pillow Queens.
'I Wanna Be a Cowboy, Baby!' follows her debut single, 'Another Day (kfc)', released in late April, and June's 'Rodney', which picked-up nods from Nialler9, Paste Magazine, the Sunday Times, Popjustice, GoldenPlec; radio stations including TodayFM, 2FM and RedFM; and Spotify, who featured the songs in playlists including New Music Friday UK, Fresh Finds and Fresh Finds: Indie.
