While attempting to entertain a 4-year old during coronavirus lockdown, I discovered how otherworldly my back yard sounded when heard through a large cardboard postal tube. High frequencies (for instance, birdsong) seem relatively unaffected, but the all-too-familiar sound of traffic passing on the main road becomes filtered in interesting ways, and the general background sound of the outside is also amplified and filtered, the frequency range depending on the dimensions of the tube.

I set about collecting a range of tubes, some wide, some narrow, some long, some short, some open-ended, some sealed at one end, and recorded them in various combinations with two microphones.

A selection of the resulting recordings are presented here, unmanipulated except for some gentle noise reduction.
