Hip hop was becoming a mainstream culture in the early 80's.
All the artist that appear in this film are real recording artists, and not just actors who can also sing; including real life graffiti artists who take part in this musical documentary style movie about the Hip Hop culture. All 4 elements of Hip Hop are well represented in this movie: The Dj, The B-Boy, Graffiti, The Mc.

The movie's final scene is what most people in the Hip Hop community consider to be the most famous Hip Hop party in history.
Some of the live tracks performed in this film became part of the actual studio recording soundtrack LP, as it appears in the film. See Wild Style for the actual film soundtrack.
