Chilly Uptown’s debut record in 1988 (I Got Rules) and his follow up album in 1991 (This Is My Method) built up his legend as a foul-mouthed, dangerous, bad-ass dude. His lyrical style fit into a developing sub-genre, an explicit rap ‘red-light district’ where rappers could say just about anything.

So let’s examine Chilly’s 1992 release, It’s About To Get Chilly, the third album from this remarkable Seattle rap artist. Witnessing his unrestrained “id” on this record is strangely liberating. Chilly finds a voice that blends the sexual obsession expressed by Luke Campbell of The 2 Live Crew with the cavalier disregard for human life portrayed by Eazy E of NWA. But at the heart of the best gangster rap albums is a jarring self-awareness, a pullback from total insanity. Rather than getting trapped by nihilism, the record instead emerges as a fully formed message in a bottle. In Chilly’s lyrics, a larger picture becomes clear of an America strangled by institutional racism. He points his pen back at the system that created him.

‘It’s about To Get Chilly’ contains many clues to what life was like for a young Chilly Uptown in 1992. It captures the highs and the lows, the loudest and the quietest. This album is a testament to the unadulterated human experience. No bleeps, no blurs, just that raw Seattle rap PIG style. Enjoy!
