Until Recently, Circle was a name I noticed only in our advertising columns, Now I state without a seconds hesitation, that in my book they produced the mosy exciting Jazz Sound I have ever heard from a Scottish Group. Their impact on me defied description for this is swinging exciting Jazz and brilliantly executed.
This is a quartet and added to the piano bass and drums of Bobby Wishart, Robin McLeod and Jackie Houlden is a sensational girl singer called Cathy Brawley. Showing the same impeccable taste and ability as a trio she embodies everything that is good in Jazz-sytle vocals , Cathy names Tony Bennett , Satah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald as her top three and it's no exaggeration to say that they, too, would be impressed by this so talented unknown.
Bobby Wishart is incredible. A music teacher with Renfrewshire Schools, he plays piano, vibes, flute and tenor sax and is not only expert on then all he swings quite furiously.
He Is so unpretentious about it all . Don't ask him to label his music 'Jazz' he sats too many people have to many opinions about what is and what isn'y Jazz. Like the immotal Louis Armstrong he just loves to swing along and communicate. And I have never heard andy Scottish Group communicate like this one.
The group play at the Lorne Hotel , Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, every Saturday lunch-time, and on Friday and Saturday evenings to a capacity audience . But don't take my word for it . Just go along - well before the strating time if you want a seat - and listen for yourself , Don't write and thank me for the tip-off. I'll see you there
