"Discords 1-5 (2010-2013)For Greg Garbage
The Discords are a series of pieces that began in 2010 as experiments in various forms of cassette, microcassette, and 1/4" tape manipulation. The source material is presented in Discord #1, which was made up of sounds from a gutted upright piano, which was then amplified repeatedly until the desired result was achieved. The remaining movements were created using the same source material, but manipulated accordingly through various means. Another process in regards to the development of the work is that each movement is increasingly amplified. A two second pause occurs in between each movement. For maximum effect, it is advised that volume is not adjusted at any point during this side of the tape. This piece is dedicated to Greg Garbage, whose work with cassettes and sound has inspired me to complete these pieces.
Dysrhythmia (2011) feat. Christina Stanley
For Pauline Oliveros
Written as part of a larger set called Transistor/Multiband, this work explores the landscapes created of tape delay feedback, shortwave radio, and sine waves. The last movement heard here features Christina Stanley on violin. The overlaying idea revolves around the manipulation of the recorded violin into the tape delay system through the implementation of superaudio, overloading the system, and the luxury of bleeding channels of tape. For this iteration, I recorded heavy electronics on two of the channels, and Christina and I recorded back over the remaining two channels in real time. The result heard here, is a distortion and change in sound of the violin through the natural failure and inconsistencies of the technology. The violin was not run through any effects for this recording, and are heard directly from the source. This piece is dedicated to a former teacher of mine, Pauline Oliveros, whose work in early electronic music has been an undoubtedly huge influence on me.
