"For twenty-five years in this country, Danny Spooner has been singing traditional songs of the sea, of war, of trades and the workplace, songs of great male characters. He is known for his sensitive rendering of human hardship, sorrow and joy - and now he sings of love.
Danny was born and raised in London and there was always music in his family; then as a working lad he sang into the wind on board Thames barges, North Sea tugs and fishing trawlers. After national service he found his way to Australia, and in the land of plenty worked at all sorts of jobs, adding Australian songs to his repertoire.
As a teenager I heard Danny sing in Frank Traynor's tiny smoke-filled club, and many years later was intrigued when I met him at Melbourne University, singing and teaching English and History so that it moved the most hardened wordsharp and ideologue. I watched him enthuse people about his tradition. Later, as his mate and offsider I, like others in the audience, was moved by its compassion and humanity.
His strong voice has filled concert halls and lecture theatres around Australia, and has boomed across open air spaces - even conjured up a storm singing shanties on the wharf at Port Fairy. Here we can experience gentler tones as he reveals men who are sentimental and loving. As always when he sings, Danny unravels tales of compelling interest and these have tender poignancy as he sings of unsuccessful love, misadventures, and of the great match that is true love."
