Scarlatti compose over 600 esercizi (sonatas) and other pieces for harpsichord which are characterized by brilliance, vivacity and melodiousness. They were written in the short dance forms typical of the time. Scarlatti freed keyboard music from the polyphonic Baroque style and used in his pieces novel tonal effects with many runs, arpeggios and tremolos. Scarlatti was probably inspired mainly by the Italian music of his time and also by Spanish folk music. Many of his short pieces have been put together as suites for concert performance.
