This 1976 stereo LP record of 60 and 30-second classical pieces was popular among public stations, including, for example, flagship-station KQED San Francisco, which used it for its station breaks and call-letter identifications. Stations used it for their breaks, identifications, announcements and for program themes and bridges. Don Voegeli created this during the early years of electronic music using a monophonic Moog® synthesizer that required him to record every note separately on its own track as it was not possible to simultaneously record two notes or a chord. Thus, creating these pieces was painstaking work requiring layering the notes together on a multi-track tape machine. That is why "realized" or "created" was used instead of "performed" or "played" when referring to recorded synthesized music. These pieces still sound great and are fun to listen to. They are digitized from the surviving master "safety" tape after more than 40 years. — Jim Voegeli, 2018ABOUT THIS MUSIC
At the CPB radio meetings in Washington last spring, there was considerable interest expressed for the production of a record with 60/30 second versions of serious music to be used as bridges in themselves or as beds for promotional and public service announcements. The problem, then, in realizing these short versions was to treat them fairly conservatively so as not to conflict greatly with announce overlays, yet interestingly enough so that the pieces might stand by themselves. For the most part I think this has been accomplished, with the possible exception of the Bach and Handel music. It was difficult to keep these pieces out of the "display" category. Some, obviously, were done with half speed recording techniques which will account for the interesting "virtuoso" sound of these pieces.
