When fellow Southend musician and writer Will Birch suggested that we further explore the Chess catalogue for this project, we were reminded how important Phil and Leonard Chess were to our collective musical education.
With a house band led by the legendary bassist Willie Dixon who also wrote and arranged so many of the classic songs, the two brothers discovered and nurtured many of our blues heros.
And so it was that regular collaborator Dave Bronze, an engineer, a reasonable wine stock and ourselves adjourned to the studios. Here it was agreed that in the spirit of the original sessions, the songs would be recorded live with a minimum of overdubs (if any) and that each one be stripped to the bone, doctored and given a Feelgood style that both amused and excited us.
