The history of "Serenissima", which the residents of Venice fondly call their city, is influenced by a series of stark contrasts. The darkest time of the Inquisition left behind its traces as well as the unbridled entertainments of the Venetian Carnevale.
The Black Plague destroyed a large part of the city's population and the sea, Venice's both beloved and frightening "bride", claims its annual. It was here that such dazzling reward but dubious characters as Casanova and Cagliostro lived and were active. Their fame helped contribute to make this city on the sea become one of the most mysterious places in the world.
