After his joint album with Madlib released in 2019, Freddie Gibbs has once again teamed up with a major producer, in this case The Alchemist, known for his work with Dilated Peoples, Action Bronson and Mobb Deep, among many others. Obviously, the team's bound to make you drool. With Alfredo, the two companions bring out Gibbs' rage and revolt, while The Alchemist’s meticulous side remains true to his reputation. When the album was released, Minneapolis was under the spotlight for protests led by the black American community against police brutality and injustice. The album embraces this theme, notably on Scottie Beam, featuring Rick Ross, anchoring the record in its time. Between references to legendary gangsters (Frank Lucas featuring Benny The Butcher), jazz guitar samples (Something to Rap About with Tyler, The Creator, Skinny Suge) and traditional sounds (1985), Alfredo is a sophisticated rap album, and an account of its time. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
