The musical pieces on this record were recorded in March 1961 in the region of Gaoua, in South-West Upper Volta. Some of the were published in 1962, grouped with other musics of various regions of Upper Volta in an album which is now out of stock (SOR 10 - 25 cm - Haute-Volta - International Grand Prize - Academie Charles Cros).

The first side of the present record is devoted to the music of the Lobi, whose xylophone elong, with 14 keys and calabash resonators, is the principal instrument, always used in the important ceremonies of initiation or at funerals.

The second side presents the musics of the Gan, Dagari and Birifor peoples, who are neighbours [...]
