Note from book, page 40: We have altered the contents of Columbia LP ML 4127 and replaced Mendelssohn's Capriccio brillant, op. 22, originally on Side 2 and performed by Dimitri Mitropoulos and the Minneapolis Symphony, with Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber and R. Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, performed by George Szell and The Cleveland Orchestra, originally released on ML 4177 on July 4, 1949 and on ML 2079 on November 7, 1949. We have amended the title wording on the original LP artwork to reflect the contents of the CD.
The Hindemith master discs have more damage noise on them as a result of repeated playing; thanks to intensive restoration efforts, we have managed to achieve good mastering results.
Editor’s Note: Mendelssohn's Capriccio brillant, op. 20 may be found on disc 20 in the Dimitri Mitropoulos, Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic - The Complete RCA And Columbia Album Collection box set. Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis may also be found on disc 23 in the Eugene Ormandy, The Philadelphia Orchestra - The Columbia Legacy box set.
