Boomkat Product Review:With its bright, endlessly warm-hearted aesthetic, Good Morning Tapes caressed our earbuds like no other this year, with a lineup of of billowing, blissful electronics that offered respite - where it were needed - from all the shite around us.
Their 2021 innings includes Pataphysical’s stunning 4th world inversion ‘Hapticality’ that transported us from dub vapours to post-new age ambient and jazz inflected interzones somewhere between CV & JAB and 0PN’s hypnagogic wooze, while South Korea’s Salamanda minted a sort of neu-environmental vernacular with a sylvan blend of wordless vocals and lissom chimes reminding us of Sakamto x Sylvian, ISAN or even Orbital’s ‘Halcyon'.
Whenever we think of Good Morning Tapes we always imagine balmy afternoons spent passed-out on a terrace somewhere in the Med - about as far away as you can get from Swan Street, Manchester - and Nueen’s ‘Nova Llum’ took us straight there with its Balearic floatation tank vibes in the vein of Eno & Budd, Roméo Poirier or Perila. Wandering mystic Jackson Bailey aka Tapes 'Silence Please’ transported us to India (tipped to the early morning Yoga crew!) and D.K’s ‘Ancient Kingdom’ delivered rhythmelodic South East Asian-inspired beatdown, rude steppers, and dancehall-psychedelia somewhere between Shackleton, DJ Python, and Horsepower Productions.
On a romance tip, Saphileaum’s ‘Transpersonal Experience’ was basically it, hitting the same sort of heartsick melancholy we get from The Art of Noise’s ‘Moments In Love’, while the third in the label’s “All Welcome” series once again provided succour for stressed energies with a sort of almanac of exclusives from its extended troupe of free spirits.
Yeah, it’s basically a 7 hour meditation kit. Sounds like we'll be needing it.
