Freedom Calls is the third of Tony Haynes's compositions for Grand Union Orchestra. Set to lyrics commissioned from writers from Jamaica, South Africa and Chile, Freedom Calls is about the struggle for liberty in different parts of the world, throughout history, with particular reference to South Africa under apartheid.

Freedom Calls was first performed at Queen's Hall for the Edinburgh Festival in August 1988. This recording was made at the Lilian Baylis Theatre, Sadler's Wells in February 1989, and was released on CD in July 1989 to coincide with the bicentennial of the French Revolution.

The Grand Union Orchestra brings a broad sweep of international talents together in one band. There are musicians from every continent playing a wide variety of instruments, some exotic, some familiar.
