For any artist, it's important to show progression. Work. Movement. Arc. Even though I didn't know it, 'Charles Called It...Anthemic' was the beginning of that for me. Even though some tracks sound like they were recorded inside a toilet bowl, the guts of the songs are there. Melodic. Stark. Anthemic. It was originally supposed to a 3 or 4 song EP that turned into a kitchen sink of lost tracks, forgotten ballads and filed-away feelings. The impetus for the record came on the heels of a Halifax trip that I took with my good friend and longtime drummer Rehuel Ernest. Having been though some of the worst stress, anxiety and general downer-times in my life, Reh and I rented a car, drove out east and recorded four or five songs with my inspirational friend, producer and engineer, Charles Austin. Without Charles' steady influence, I can honestly say that Graven would have died in a basement ages ago.released January 1, 2006
