Label: GAD Records

One of the best moral anxiety movies which had no chance to contribute to this cinema movement… The film was shelved and in the late 1970s no one could admire the excellent performance by Krzysztof Zaleski, nor the smart craft of its director, nor the unusual music by Jacek Bednarek which is now finally released on an album.

Before that film, Jacek Bednarek had almost exclusively been associated with the jazz double bass, and his performances were an adornment to the works of Jerzy Milian’s trio or the avant-garde activities of Andrzej Kurylewicz’s Formacja Muzyki Współczesnej. “The Student’s Book” marked his debut as a film music composer. For Janusz Kijowski’s picture, Bednarek wrote quite an ascetic illustration based on an unusual harmony of a double bass and… a harpsichord, and added the drums and the piano to these two dominants. He recorded all the instruments himself, creating an interesting film illustration, and above all an intriguing, self-contained music, with an unusual sound texture. The soundtrack pulsates with the main character’s nerves (“Czołówka”, “Uniwersytet”) and at times escapes into dreams and nostalgia (“Dworzec”). The music still sounds fresh, is thought-provoking and engages with its otherness.

Recordings for “Indeks” have now been released for the first time, remastered from the original tapes kept at the archives of the CeTA Audiovisual Technology Center in Wrocław. The booklet contains an essay about the film and the soundtrack, plus stills from the set. The cover is based on an original poster by Andrzej Pągowski. The album is yet another addition to the joint CeTA and GAD Records publishing series, which presents the most fascinating film music recordings from the archives of the former Wrocław Feature Film Studio.

Recorded most likely in Warsaw at a Polish Radio studio, 1977.

Issued in a standard jewel case with a clear tray. Includes a 16-page booklet.
