"I never knew the boy who lived beneath me, but the strange sonics that would squeeze impolitely through my paper-thin floorboards came to soak everything I lived in those final, anxious months at College. I'd be lying on my bed, eyes glued on a canto of Dante's Purgatory or an Eclogue of Virgil, and the sound would suddenly start up without warning, some days bellowing forth through my window with assured beauty, on others creeping up on me apologetically, all hissy glitches and monaural gloom. I hadn't any idea how or indeed if my neighbour was creating these musics, yet my imagination flirted with ever wilder (im)possibilities...Did he spend his days grappling with towers of whirling modular synthesisers, fighting to make himself heard in an expanse of blinking digitalia? Or did he sit cooly in front of a computer screen as overworked processors spewed out programmed chaos? Somehow, the truth didn't matter, and I took to documenting this fascinating aural pollution as best I could, rather haphazardly employing a tape-recorder stolen from the Italian department. The enclosed compact disc represents a small selection of these recordings."
