Live At Berkeley Vol. 2 by Jimi Hendrix

Album Info

Release Date: 2009-03-23

Label: Rock Of Ages

The Community Theatre, part of the Berkeley High School in California, was selected for two performances on Memorial Day, 30th May 1970, even though students across the country had been protesting strongly for some time about the Vietnam War. Earlier that month in Berkeley, 3,000 of them had also violently objected to the fencing-off of the Peoples Park, a vacant plot of land on the campus which the students had cleaned up. The Governor of California, Ronald Reagan, had called in the national Guard and thirty students were injured; one was killed and one blinded. Tension between the students and campus authorities was high.

As Jimi arrived at the 3,400-seat venue, the unrest continued. Not surprisingly, the tickets for the concerts had quickly sold out. Over 1,000 fans had been turned away. Desperate to hear Jimi, some scaled the walls and tried to enter via the roof while others threw rocks at the lucky ticket holders arriving for the first concert.
