Pre-Rivera? What the?...

I met Nick DiMauro in college (the Stony Brook Music Department to be exact) and to make an absurdly long story short, I gave him a cassette of my crude musical experiments and he didn’t run away screaming. He actually dug it. And if the atmosphere was right during Orchestration class he would even quote a line from one my songs, most notably, You’re Gonna Die Someday. It was then I knew that he wasn't one of those fly by night acquaintances. We hung out a little more each successive day, sometimes at his house (which was a new experience for me) and listened to records on his father's ultra class A Hi-Fi equipment. Nick was without question, the funniest, most obnoxious, imaginative person I'd ever met, so that in itself was cool and enough to keep me from being one of the most anti social characters in the music department. Our shared sense of humor, philosophy and love for hip chord changes made going through the motions of college a lot easier. To top it off, his parents were always kind to me and countless times fed me some of the best home made cooking anywhere. Speaking of food, it was Nick who introduced me to chicken and broccoli, cold noodles in sesame sauce and Chinese roast pork. He taught me why it was ok to take off my jacket at other peoples houses especially on hot summer days. And he exposed me to David Lynch's film
"E r a s e r h e a d " which put my absurd life into perspective. Yes, things were changing for me. For both of us. Soon my sister Laura would
think to herself, "Who is this strange guy my brother is hanging out with?" " He doesn't know how to hang out or have friends."
Well, that was 1982...

Two years later Nick and I purchased some 8 track equipment and set up tent in my bed room, and occasionally at his upstairs vortex. We collaborated on many ideas, honed our engineering skills and even got paid for recording local talent. This CD is a preview of the work we would do once we really became involved in the “real music world”. The absurd humor still carried over and the sarcastic-parody like flavor of this early work still remains intact. Of course the song writing and the arrangements are tighter now-a-days and the fidelity is far superior from these 8 track babies. But it was with these musical fornications that the “dog/child” Brian Rivera was born. It’s future still dangling by a Muffin. It’s hibernation in the late 90s still one of speculation. What will happen? More tunes? Mutant Catalytic Converter Puppies? A re-grouping of new philosophies and styles? As Brian once sang : Time Will Tell.
