L’oiseau chante avec ses doigts is a lucid dream by Joni Void & N NAO, a soundscape of fragile and psychedelic music, full of surreal symbolism, coming to life in a montage of live takes improvised by the duo. First release of a duo of sister albums (the other album is called Jardin), L’oiseau chante avec ses doigts evokes the night / the moon where the previous one was the day / the sun. An intimate and emotional voyage through the looking glass, and into a dream world where silence speeds up in reverse.
Joni Void & N NAO are the respective monikers of surrealists Jean Néant and Naomie de Lorimier, based in Montreal, Quebec. They found each other in 2016 through a poetry-reading/performance by Naomie in Jean’s home at the time, a DIY loft-venue known as The Plant. This would lead to numerous events there and in many other Montreal underground spaces where they were both involved, until they finally worked on a collaborative piece for Joni Void’s album Mise en Abyme, released in 2019 on Constellation Records. Following that collaboration, they began performing together as a duo, including a performance at St-Édouard Church for the 2019 edition of the Suoni Per Il Popolo festival. They released their first proper duo album, Nature Morte, on Laaps Records in Fall 2020. Having gathered an abundant amount of material during the recording sessions for their debut album, this formed the basis of a series of albums that are more loyal to their roots of improvised performances & soundscapes performed as a duo : the records essentially consist of live takes layered & edited together, with no overdubs or extra production.
