Ili (Yining) is a kazak autonomous region. in ili prefecture live 650000 Uyghur people, ranking third largest ethnic group after the Hans and the Kazaks, but are the predominant ethnic group of Xinjiang with 9 millions people. This north western part of Xinjiang is considered kazak ever since kazak existed, but in contact with lots of other proto turkish ethnic groups. If the kazaks were nomads, the Uyghurs with whom they share a lot linguistically were sedentary merchants and agriculturalists. This Uyghur music styles of Ili are different from the the Uyghur styles of the south.
