"La Makina del Karibe – the Caribbean Machine! The AfroCaribbean champeta style, upbeat and accompanied by strident electric guitars, is strongly reminiscent of West African soukous and rumba congolaise. In Colombia, champeta has developed mainly in and around Cartagena de Indias, a city on the Caribbean coast where you’ll still find many an old vinyl record shipped directly from West Africa during the 1970s and 1980s. (It’s also the place were the first terápia and later champeta soundsystems and bands were established. Even today, singers there will perform original songs in the costeño style, i.e. in a special language based on original African languages.)"
