Album Info

Release Date: 1976

Label: Columbia

No JG Catalog #'s on cover

Double album, manual sequence.
Recordings made between 1936-37, with Lester Young playing with Jones-Smith, Incorporated (Count Basie, piano), with Teddy Wilson & His Orchestra, and with Billie Holiday & Her Orchestra.

Re-recording studios: Columbia Records, New York City.
Technical note: In assembling the titles that make of the albums in the Lester Young Story, we drew on original shellac 78s, laminated reissues, 16" glass and metal-based acetates, vinyl test pressings, 10" and 12" LPs, and quarter-, half-, and full-track tapes, each with their own peculiar sound qualities. [ . . . ] Test pressings, which should have provided us with the best of all possible transfers, were often unusable, owing to the masters having buckled and corroded over the years. In some cases, unused metal parts had been destroyed and we had to borrow less than perfect tape copies from generous collectors.

Back cover might contain "For Governmental Sale Only" gold stamp.
