Martha Rendell was the last woman to be hanged in Western Australia. She murdered her defacto's two daughters by lacing their food with something to make their throats sore then swabbing their throats with hydrochloric acid when they complained of a sore throat. This was repeated until the children died. Neighbours testified that she was "not a likeable woman" and frequently beat her defacto's children. In court it was revealed that she derived sexual pleasure from seeing the children in pain and appeared to be in "sexual ecstasy" when they screamed and writhed in agony. She was found guilty and sentenced to hanging at Fremantle Prison on 6th October 1909. The image of her face looking out is said to still be visible to this day in the window of the prison cathedral - but only from the outsideRecorded live at 299 Dianella Perth WA Tuesday August 6th 2012 at 1:45am.
