Liner notes by SoundslikeCornwall:Marazion Apollo Choir (Founded 1904)
APOLLO-God of the sun, God of song-is indeed a happy name for one of Cornwall's leading male choirs - the Marazion Apollo.
Since its foundation in 1904, it has chalked-up a list of successes too long to appear on a record sleeve, but we mention that they were Cornish Champions for five years in succession, took 'Firsts' at the London Music Festival in 1958 and, perhaps more importantly, took 'Firsts' again at the famous Blackpool Festival (Advanced Class) in 1969. In 1971, they brought the house down' at the Albert Hall and, in consequence, became the first choir to have been invited back when they appeared there again in 1973.
The Apollo continues to be led by that dedicated man of music John J. Matthews, to whom all credit must be given for the choirs great reputation. In this their 70th year, we wish them continuing success, as we present them in this first Sentinel album "Apollo 70."
