Marcos Antonio Fernández, pianist and composer from Santiago, is a musician who works between classical piano, African heritage and the Cuban character of our most native genres."Presencia" recreates emblematic scores of popular music and others of his own in the sound environment of what has been called Cuban Descarga.
A broad and permeable definition, Descarga is nothing more than applying the principles of improvisation to the initially proposed instrumental thematic development. What has been common practice in jazz since the times of ragtime and the oldest blues has also been common practice in Cuban music, regardless of the fact that the pairing with jazz strengthened this creative vein.
Marcos Antonio has the tumbao – a key element in the complex of the son – as the starting and ending point for his and his colleagues' interventions in a refined and grateful music. The Wizard of Tumbao will have to be called, after listening to this album, the Wizard of Descarga.
