"It was while preparing for surgery that 'The Inpatient' became a possibility. Amid fasting and the histrionic evacuation of intestinal contents, one's sense of reality finds less clarity. In states like this, improvising Spanish love poems irrespective of my inability to speak Spanish seems like a worthwhile idea. I tend to gravitate toward moments of physical distress when mining ideas."
