"In a distant past, all poetry was sung or tunefully recited, poets were rhapsodes, bards, troubadours; "lyrics" comes from "lyre"."- Richard F. Thomas
“One of the things I wanted to do with this record was say yes it is adolescent, rock music is adolescent, but like so what? What does that mean? Does it mean it’s bad? Because it’s not, and I can still appreciate things about rock music that are very adolescent but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t have those things in amongst something that’s very literate and intelligent at the same time.”
- Rowland S. Howard
“The Six Strings of Sappho” is the sophomore EP from Sydney Singer-songwriter Maxine Gillon, retaining her signature abrasive sonic textures whilst also adding stylistic nods to key conceptual influences such as proto-punk and the 80’s Australian post-punk boom. It explores a wider scope conceptually than previously, musing on the lineage of poetry and music as a naturally combined entity, one’s place in their environment in a physical, political and spiritual context and in finding solace through singledom.
