Born Peter Chatman on September 3rd 1915 in Memphis Tennessee, into a world of juke houses and honky tonks, Memphis Slim was playing professionally by the age of 15.
By that time he had already had the chance to absorb the great piano players of the era, either on disc or at first hand.
In the late thirties he headed north to Chicago like so many jazz and blues performers. In recent years he has settled in Europe and with several successful visits to Britain behind him, and a dozen or so discs available here, this 6' 6' blues pianist is becoming a firm favourite with jazz, blues and folk audiences.
