Interview with Lars Ulrich for a magazine during a press availability to promote 'Master Of Puppets' in advance of its release. Lars discusses the songs, songwriting process, and plays clips from an LP of the album. The interviewer states that he has heard the album just once, on a tape. Date of the recording is likely to be February 1986 based on album release date, March 3, 1986, known rejected 'Mix 1' and 'Mix 2' Music For Nations test pressings, and Music For Nations sales sheet dated February 13, 1986.Topics in part 1 include: comparison to other bands, like Mercyful Fate and Manowar, the planned tour with Ozzy Osbourne and becoming a "big band" in America, how the new album retains "old Metallica" ('Damage Inc.') and introduces "new Metallica" ('Orion'), criticism of other bands becoming formulaic (e.g. Judas Priest), lyrical and song themes.
Topics in part 2 include: 'The Thing That Should Not Be' as related to H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, the suggestion by Elektra that 'Welcome Home (Sanitarium)' had potential as a single and should be placed elsewhere on the album, the length of the album and technical limitations of vinyl (inner groove distortion), the thematic cohesiveness of the album.
