The Talking Parrot / Cinemascope by Mighty Panther, The Jamaican Calypsonians

Artists

Album Info

Release Date: 1956

Label: Kalypso

Music by Local Calypso Band.
Uncredited vocal chorus by Dictator.

Panther is credited on the labels as writer, however "Talking Parrot" was previously recorded by another calypsonian in Trinidad in 1952. Some researchers question his writing "Cinemascope". Kalypso also released these two titles on RL15 by Count Lasher with no writer credits. Records Limited was established in Jamaica late 1954 (source: mentomusic.com). Panther published lyrics to "Cinemascope" in Trinidad 1956. After leaving Jamaica he recorded for Art Records in the US, late 1956 (source: Mighty Panther, Lad Richards Calypso Orch. - West Indian Calypso Magic). This recording would be between 1955 - 1956.

While researching this release it was discovered between myself and Dan Neely that the Catalogue/Runouts are one digit away from a recording by Hubert Porter of exactly these two songs, recorded with the same backing band, 'The Jamaican Calypsonians'. The arrangements are extremely similar. It seems extremely likely that these songs were recorded by two different artists at the same recording session. Panther was not Jamaican, though this was recorded in Jamaica. Hubert Porter was a Jamaican homegrown talent.
