"Watermelon Man" and "Don't Bother Me No More" recorded at Plaza Sound Studios on Dec. 17, 1962. All other selections, Sides 1 and 2 recorded at Plaza Sound Studios on Feb. 18 and 20, 1963. Sides 3 and 4 recorded at The Village Gate, New York City, on Sept. 2, 1963.

"Watermelon Man" and "Don't Bother Me No More" were issued together as a 45-rpm on the Battle label. The rest of Sides 1 and 2 were originally issued, with those two selections included, as the album "Watermelon Man" (Battle 6120). Sides 3 and 4 were originally issued as "Mongo at the Village Gate" (Battle 6129), except "Para Ti", which was first issued as part of "Mongo Explodes" (Riverside 3530).
