6. Mrs. Jackson’s Gift (inspired by a neighbor of ours in the Highland Park section of Los Angeles)

8. The Gadfly’s Theme (Otelia Conner of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)
9. Requiem for Uncle Obie (a neighbor in Graham, North Carolina)
10. A Conversion in the Desert (story by a man on a Greyhound bus traveling through Arizona)
11. Milton Berstein’s Secret (about a distant cousin from Russia)
12. The Long Blue Line (Walter Paige’s running of the New York City Marathon)
13. Life and Death (a story of unrequited love)
14. The Philosopher’s Waltz (from “Janeela” and “Theodore Shane”... two stories about philosophers)
15. Anita and Haywood (a couple who lived on the Courthouse Square in Graham, North Carolina)
