Original release on Columbia Gold Band label with "Grafonola" in the logo, six patents in two long lines of equal length (sub-variety i) and label printing date code FZ (= June 1917). Later releases use different take numbers, e.g., Indiana / Darktown Strutters' Ball (Feb. 1918) uses take 3 on the A side.

Runouts are stamped with the matrix numbers, the other stamped alpha-numeric sequences are under the labels.

According to Tony Sbarbaro this was the very first recording-session by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. The Columbia files give May 31/June 1, 1917 as possible recording dates. These dates are to be considered approximate recording dates. According to Horst H. Lange, this may have been recorded as early as late 1916.
